چکیده

Hyrophila spinosa (H. spinosa) is used in folk medicine for various ailments and its different pharmacological activities have been reported. The present study was aimed at the evaluation of the nephrocurative and antioxidant effects of aqueous extract of H. spinosa against gentamicin (GM)induced nephrotoxicity. Male Sprague Dawley rats (200-250g) were treated with gentamicin at 80 mg/kg i.p. for eight days and starting from day 9, the rats were treated with 50 mg/kg p.o. and 250 mg/kg p.o. H. spinosa for remaining 22 days. Blood samples were taken for the estimation of serum creatinine and urea. At the end of the experiment, kidneys were used for the estimation of superoxide dismutase, lipid peroxidation, catalase, reduced glutathione and for conducting histopathological studies. Gentamicin at the dose used significantly (P<0.05) increased the serum creatinine, urea, lipid peroxidation levels and significantly (P<0.05) decreased superoxide dismutase, catalase and reduced glutathione levels. It also produced severe histological changes. H. spinosa at 250 mg/kg orally significantly (P<0.05) reduced the creatinine, urea and lipid peroxidation levels, increased superoxide dismutase, catalase, reduced glutathione levels and reversed the histopathological changes produced by GM administration. This effect was dose dependent and in conclusion, the study suggested that H. spinosa reduced GM-induced nephrotoxicity.

Effect of Tephrosia purpurea (L.) Pers. Leaves on Gentamicin-Induced Nephrotoxicity in Rats

The aim of the study was to evaluate the nephroprotective and nephrocurative effects of Tephrosia purpurea (L.) Pers. leaves against gentamicin-induced acute renal injury in albino rats. The maximum free radical scavenging activity of the ethanolic extract was the basis for the selection of this extract for the in vivo study. Gentamicin (40 mg/kg, s.c.) was administered to induce toxicity in th...

A biochemical and histopathologic study showing protection and treatment of gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicity in rabbits using vitamin C.

Gentamicin and vitamin C have been proposed as nephrotoxic and antioxidant, respectively. This study involved biochemical and histopathologic investigation showing protection and treatment of gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicity in rabbits using vitamin C for 26 days hypothesizing that whether vitamin C would inhibit or decrease the raised serum urea and creatinine levels. This study was conducted...

Gains from diversification on convex combinations: A majorization and stochastic dominance approach

By incorporating both majorization theory and stochastic dominance theory, this paper presents a general theory and a unifying framework for determining the diversification preferences of risk-averse investors and conditions under which they would unanimously judge a particular asset to be superior. In particular, we develop a theory for comparing the preferences of different convex combination...

Improved immunogenicity of tetanus toxoid by Brucella abortus S19 LPS adjuvant.

BACKGROUND Adjuvants are used to increase the immunogenicity of new generation vaccines, especially those based on recombinant proteins. Despite immunostimulatory properties, the use of bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) as an adjuvant has been hampered due to its toxicity and pyrogenicity. Brucella abortus LPS is less toxic and has no pyrogenic properties compared to LPS from other gram negati...

Steady electrodiffusion in hydrogel-colloid composites: macroscale properties from microscale electrokinetics.

A rigorous microscale electrokinetic model for hydrogel-colloid composites is adopted to compute macroscale profiles of electrolyte concentration, electrostatic potential, and hydrostatic pressure across membranes that separate electrolytes with different concentrations. The membranes are uncharged polymeric hydrogels in which charged spherical colloidal particles are immobilized and randomly d...
